Chinese May 5th

Chinese calendar May 5th is a traditional Chinese holiday. The May 5th is for memorize a famous Chinese poet Quyuan. He dived in a river suicide two thousands years before. In the May 5th day, Chinese have many activities.

People cook Zongzi. The Zongzi is sweet rice wrapped with bamboo leaves, and with many kinds of flavors and beautiful sharps. People dropped Zongzi in the river to feed fish so that the fish wouldn’t eat Quyuan’s body before. Today‘s people cook Zongzi just for enjoy the delicious food.

People also need eat salt duck egg, peach, garlic, yellow wine… (Sorry, long time ago, I forgot it.) Summer is coming, and it will bring many viruses. So people eat many kinds of food for keeping healthy in this year.

People have dragon boat race. The original purpose of dragon boat race was expelling fish to prevent fish eating Quyuan’s body. Today’s dragon boat race is an enjoyable sport.

People go to hiking to wish have a healthy year, and they believe the hiking can take sickness away. People also pick up some plant leaves, and boil these leaves, and put the water in tub to keep healthy good skin in the summer time. Some people also hang the leaves as apotropaion in front of their door. The leaves can be used as medicine in this year.

Many today’s Chinese young people don’t know what the May 5th is and also don’t know many traditional Chinese holidays. They enjoy western holiday. I never wrapped Zongzi and made salt duck egg when I was in China, but I did it in the U.S. I’m more Chinese after live in the U.S. I learned more Chinese traditional things in the U.S than in China. Maybe after many years, no Chinese holiday in China and Chinese in China will learn how to celebrate Chinese holiday from Chinese in West Country.

Yes, that is true. When we leave our homes in China we wish for the things from China. I never went shopping in China for food. Now I go to the 99 store at least 2 times each week. I made Chinese holiday foods with some friends.

There is a dragon boat race club in San Jose. I went to one of their race. Maybe you can go too?

Oh, yes, I forgot, we also have to have Chinese calendar and Western calendar to keep track of our holidays. I thought last month 5 May was the holiday.

Do an internet search for Bay Area Dragons. I think they practice at the Oracle lagoon in Redwood City. The national championships will be at Treasure Island in the fall.
