London - Chinatown Olympic Torch Gateway to London's Chinatown It snowed overnight and for a brief moment, it was almost white outside. It soon turned to mostly wet slush. On our way to Chinatown, we encountered groups of anti-Chinese, pro-Tibetan protestors who were there to protest the Beijing Olympics. However, it seemed as though most of the people on the street were out to cheer on the runners and to have a good time. We got off the bus at the entrance to Chinatown and started for the restaurant. At the entrance to Chinatown a group of protestors approached us and ased if we were there to protest the dismal Chinese human rights policy in Tibet. I smiled and said no, not really, I am here for dim sum and walked away from them as quickly as possible. Pro-China supporters crowded the sidewalks and streets. However, we were able to find our restaurant and our friends waiting for us. Soon, we heard an increase of cheering as the Chinese runner ran on Gerrard Street through Chinatown. I could not see over the crowd but I did see the torch and flame as it passed by. I stood there proud to be Chinese with my fellow Chinese expatriates. As usual, there was so much to choose from the dim sum carts. The lightly roasted chicken feet were nice to nibble on, sort of like a buffalo wing. By the time we finished and exited the restaurant, most of the crowd had dispersed and gone home. The streets were slushy with sleet like downpour. The lanterns that lined the street looked somewhat dowdy as we walked to the ceremonial gate that marks the exit from Chinatown. We hopped on a bus and went to visit "The London Eye." VICKY |
