Obama - Tell me, why do you defend angry Black men?

A Black man assaulted Minghui Yu, a graduate student at Columbia University, on 7 April. He was hit by an SUV as he was fleeing his assailant. When the police arrested the young assailant, the Black crowd told the police to leave the alone since he was only 14 years old and the victim was only a Chinaman.

I wonder as I read the accounts of what happened to this young man why the Black community sits quietly and does not condemn the actions of its own group of angry Black men.

I wonder why white Americans are so concerned about what is happening in Darfur and Tibet and yet they close their eyes on the assault on the Asian community here in the United States.

I wonder is it because we Chinese are considered a threat to these white protestors who claim to abhor violence and yet their very tactics in protesting the peaceful symbol of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing as it raced around the world touched on violence?

Before anyone dares to call me a racist for condemning the violent actions of a Black man and the passive reaction from the white liberal community here in America on this assault on a Chinese operate, I wear my race on my face. I dare you to walk with me in a Black neighborhood on a dark night.

I wonder if Obama really does care.

I doubt it.

my 2 cents worth......

for long I've read this stuff by sociologists and their recommendations etc..etc....but things hv never got better...infactit kept slidign from worst into the pits....only of late that imbalance is improved with growing hispanic.

in the 70s/80s, when there were more guns control, there were less idiotic bravery. We could walk the street of SF area aft midnight and be ready with our running or combat skills but now everywhere is unsafe in the states and more now that economy is real bad shape...

As someone with 2 degrees from Columbia University and a native New Yorker, I have witnessed the racism towards Asians in general from the university level right down to the streets. The racism is by white people also but perhaps more uglier by the black population.

Stand outside any nightclub in NYC and the comments made towardss Asian women are the most vile. Really disgusting...

On the other hand, I have heard educated financial types, typical white guy, married with children ask my staff for "happy endings". This to a young lady working as a cocktail waitress while pursuing her masters at Brown. They are fair game for these scum.

Asians do not need me to be their spokesperson or protector but I am more aware than most of the bias and indignities shown them in one of the most liberal cities in America.

Reemember that fool Rosie O'Donnellgiving a "ching chong" rant...?

Race is only one of the issues involved in this situation. Unfortunately, that aspect is going to be overplayed, just because the attacker was a stereotypical young, black THUG and the victim was a stereotypically studious, hard-working Chinese man at an Ivy League school.

The dead student will be properly mourned. His attacker is in custody and will be prosecuted, hopefully as an adult, for second-degree manslaughter. This is exactly what would happen if the attacker had been white and the victim had also been white. So unless we believe the 14-year-old black boy was trying to committ a race crime, there's no reason to inject more of that issue into it than what is actually there.

If I was Chinese, I'd be indignant too, given the Tibet and Darfur issues that a lot of whites are trumpeting about while something like this occurs in NYC. If there's a real issue, it's this -- not the alleged "racism" of a black-on-Asian random attack.

Vicky ~ I read five or six news accounts of this story after reading your blog entry. I could find no mention of any blacks insisting the attacker be "left alone" because the victim was "only Chinese." Given the spirit of the times, such a detail would have been newsworthy, I think.

Anyway, I respect you for taking the issue on in your blog.

~ Brian
