Beijing Olympics

We arrived in Beijing last Thursday and settled down in our hotel for the duration of the games. My sister cancelled our hotel tickets in July and last week she got the same rooms at a deep discount with a few extras added such as spa passes, a few free dinners, and a nice stack of chits for cocktails in the lounge.

We missed seeing the grand opening of the Olympic Games in person but we had a great view of the fireworks from the hotel where we are staying. Plus, our rooms have super-sized flat screen TVs to watch the different contests that we will not be watching in person.

So far, we have been able to watch in person Synchronized 10m Diving, Women's Beach Volleyball, Women's Softball, Women's Fencing

We have tickets for 8/15 Track & Field, 8/18 Synchronized Swim Competition, 8/19 Women's Beach Volleyball, 8/19 Women's Basketball, 8/21 Women's Beach Volleyball Finals, 8/21 Track & Field, 8/24 The biggest prize of all, four tickets to the closing ceremonies!!!!

We've noticed something interesting regarding tickets. The major sports the Chinese public are familiar with and they know they have a strong chance of winning a gold medal are difficult to get tickets for. However, the prelims for the same events are readily available.

We're trying to get tickets for some of the sports we want to see in person. Others, such as the Triathalon, Handball, Table Tennis are best watched on TV in our rooms with ready access to the air conditioner and cool drinks delivered by room service.

Oh, there is one sport not on the agenda but I'm going to be doing a lot of, "shopping!"

Additional photos are posted in my Friends Network albums as well as my non-AFF blog site.

The nice think about attending the games was the chance to sit next to peoples from different countries in the world and also sitting with Chinese who saved a lot of their money to come to Beijing for a few days to experience the Olympics. We had a wonderful time talking to total strangers and learning more about them and where they come from. When the Americans or the Chinese were not participating in the event we cheered for the teams with the best looking guys or maybe for the team we thought was the underdog or maybe the team whose side we were sitting on. It was truly fun.282

Checking her American Express to see if there is any room left to buy some nice handbags for friends

But I enjoyed the shopping and wandering through the hutongs and finding the little neighborhood restaurants where the local people go for dinner and the places where the people of my generation go to meet their friends. I think I met a lot of nice people there.

The shopping was really great. On Monday we bought a lot of souvenirs for our friends and family in the USA and sent it to our home address via FedEx since it is cheaper that way instead of carrying it around with us.

We met a lot of really great fashion designers and the dresses they had for us to look at were truly beautiful and well made. I loved the custom made shoes and of course the affordable custom made dresses that were ready within 24 hours.

Beijing, regardless of the weather or the smog conditions, is a wonderful city filled with wonderful people, and wonderous things to see and experiece.

Hi Vicky,
This is the first time that I have read a quality profile. I am now watching the BJ Olympics replay. The opening ceremony really impressed me and so were the games. We do have TVs at our office, and we enjoy all games participated by the Chinese. I enjoyed the synchronized diving and gyn and women volleyball. Hope to see a really impressive closing ceremony, and hope u have lots of fun in BJ.
Cynthia
