John Steinbeck and Self Defense

As John Steinbeck once said:

"The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. The sword is more important than the shield and skill is more important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

"Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

"If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

"I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy.

"When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

"A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a .45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a .46.'

"An armed man will kill an unarmed man with monotonous regularity.

"The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?' 'No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle.'

"Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!!

"I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did. She said 'Well I certainly hope it isn't loaded!' To which I said, of course it is loaded, can't work without bullets!' She then asked, 'Are you that afraid of some one evil coming into your house?' My reply was, 'No not at all. I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too.' To which I'll add, having a gun in the house that isn't loaded is like having a car in the garage without gas in the tank.

My goodness gracious, I do declare but isn't SteveZ being rather naive about bully boys wanting to do great bodily harm upon your body? Is he really saying that we don't have the right to defend ourselves and that only criminals, murders, thugs, and all the nice people that SteveZ befriends are the only ones with rights to kill and create major mayhem?

SteveZ, you just don't get it do you. We're not talking about little Tommy Tucker and SteveZ getting into a fight and going all out and killing each other. No way do I advocate that. But what John Steinbeck meant was that sometimes when we do get into a serious situation where it's either them or me and I really don't want to imagine what them is going to to do poor little me that perhaps I do have the right to defend myself with whatever mans possible. It also means that if put into a situation where I do have to defend myself then I don't need to stop as soon as the other person cries "uncle" or says "SteveZ doesn't approve of violence." Nope. No siree indeed. If you don't want the bad guy even thinking of doing it again you have to make it very clear to he/she/it that you really mean business and that if they attempt to do it again it's going to be even worst then the thrashing you just administered to them.

Ninjas!!!! My gawd, boy, them guys just don't exist anymore except in your martial arts imagiantion.

In regards to the ageless bloodbaths that have occured or are currently happening it just goes to show it's all part of human nature. I wonder wnat is going to happen to you should you decide to walk into the midst of taliban terrorist wearing their suicide vests and you suggest they join you in a chorus of "kumbaya."

A gun is a false sense of security.

In most events, you couldnt get your gun out of its holster and
be ready in time. In most cases, The event of a robbery.. is a pure
surprise. After his gun is drawn... any attempt at yours draw will
cause him to fire well before you draw.

In the Home, if you keep your Guns loaded... more than likely
your kids will end up accidentally shooting each other, or
themselves. OR... they will take said gun to fend off a school
bully... and all will end Very Badly.

And again... Are you so sure you are going to be able to get
to your gun when you are sound asleep? Not all break-ins are
noisy.

And then there is the concept of the Ninja. They dont shoot you.
Instead, they wait until you fall asleep. Sneak up on you.. and
drip poison down into your lips. (or slit your throat)

As well as the whole concept of one vs a gang...

And

"Live by the Sword, Die by the Sword"

Almost forgot... There are things that can ruin someones life
that dont even involve a single weapon being fired, or fist being
thrown.

--- Now --- lets review some of these:

The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense.

Wrong. If your 5 yr old kid tries to attack your 8yr old kid...
Do you really want the 8yr old to Kill them?! Fighting usually is
the result of poor communications, misunderstandings, and disrespect.
However... after a couple of shots are thrown... Mutual respect
usually follows quite quickly. And while the 8yr old is more than
capable of destroying the little brat... he should be better than
that. Not lowering himself to such a level. Being able to control
his own emotions and aggressions... so that in the end, there is
peace, instead of spilled blood. Its called Maturity.

"If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

What are you fighting for? Its very possible the reason why
you are in a fight is because what you were doing was UNFAIR.

Nowhere does this or many of these point out to any MORALITY.

Finally... we can see many places in the world which have been
fighting forever. This may continue on forever. If one side
even was big enough to stop killing the other.... the revenge
killings would cease, as well as more than likely leading to
peaceful talks and eventual endings to the fighting.

No. These words and concepts of being the unantagonized
merciless Aggressor/killer is not morally correct.

If you dont agree, then go tell your little boys its ok to
kill each other next time they have a disagreement. Tell them
it doesnt matter who is right or wrong. Whoever wins is
the most important... so feel free to preemptively strike
without cause. (out of fear, or out of wanting absolute control)

Your post are as transparent as glass.
(and equally fragile against the real truths)
