Going Home

China. It has never been my home. It is a place my parents left to go to America. These past four weeks have been a most wonderful time for me. We even had a chance to see where my father and mother lived in China.

Beijing. Beijing was beautiful. We stayed in a wonderful hotel with a staff trying to make our stay as memorable as possible. Nothing was too small or too difficult for them to do for us. I even had an offer of one woman's who is a student at one of Beijing's top universities. Oh well, he is a nice man but not really my type. However, he was a wonderful guide during our stay in Beijing. We visited many back alleys and found some fabulous places where the locals hang out at after work. This was the China my parents came from. We met a lot of nice people at the Olympic Green and in all of the venues where we watched the world's best athletes compete. There was good natured rivalry between national fans when their team/athlete was competing. I had no favorites. I only wanted to savor this moment.

Shanghai. Every time I come here, it changes. Old neighborhoods disappear and tall, modern structures take its place. Too much noise and too much traffic. Everyone is trying to make money. However, there are still out of the way places where I can go and find beautiful fashion created by locals who use a blend of East & West for their inspirations. My sister wants to work with some of the designers we met. I got a custom dress that blends east/west beautifully.

Shenzhen. Our factory is here. It is not really that big but it does have many workers who work hard to help many other people make a living. Everyone is dependent on them to produce a quality product. No one is from here. Most are from regions to the west of here, some from small villages where you have to walk for miles just to get to a road where you can wait for hours until a bus comes along to take you to the nearest train station. They are very skillful and hard working employees.

Home. Nice sound to that word. It means many things to me but most of all it means family. That is where my parents live. That has been the center of my life for most of my 26 years. I have been away a few times for school but something always draws be back to San Francisco and home.

House. That is the place that I live in since I graduated from university and started working on my own. It is an investment property my parents helped me to purchase earlier this year. It is not as warm as home, yet. Maybe someday, when I have it will be a home. However, for now it is a place where I go after work or school and sleep. My friends do not even know where it is. It is my private little hide away from the real world.

In a few days, I will be in my house laying on my bed and reminiscing of all the places I have visited this past year. On Tuesday, it is back to the laboratory to do research for the rest of the academic year.
