Oriental or Asian

I was recently told that to describe someone as an Oriental person as opposed to an Asian person is either insulting, offensive or just plain wrong.
Can someone help me with this? I would certainly not want to inadvertently offend anyone.
Gratefully,
Al

Insulting is a big word, i think its just wrong. The "orient" are countries in Europe and Asia who touches each other near the border Europe and Asia.

Very easy to remember. Oriental is an object. Asian is a aperson. Think that way and you not get into problems.
