Yellow Hankerchief, a Japanese film based on the song, "Yellow Ribbon" by Tony Orlando and Dawn, tells the story of a Japanese felon's trip to him home in Hokaido after spending several years in prison. It's a great film and a nice scenic road trip of Japan of the 1970s.

I saw the movie and a few years ago I had the chance to follow the "Yellow Handkerchief" route. It was truly an awesome travel adventure.

Thanks for the suggestion...I went looking for a "legal" DVD copy of "the Yellow Hankerchief..." ...The rental service I use, did not have it...Some asian retail DVD sites had it, but I hope some film festival will have it....After your suggestion, I went looking for it...If nothing else, in my searches in response to your posting, I found some other interesting Japanese movies to watch...

Thanks! I am always looking for new movies to watch. Sometimes if you watch the movie with commentary (e.g., special features in Criterion Collection movies), you get some of that insight that you may not have had.
