Wood stick cotton swabs...

With the exception of cleaning swabs used in the audio industry, all the ones I've seen are made with paper or pliable plastic tubing.
I'm sure it's a liability issue as wood tends to split (like those toothpicks I recently blogged about) and paper doesn't.
When I went to China I found they sell wood stick cotton swabs and brought home a pack. Those are gone and I forgot to tell my wife to buy more on her visit this past summer.
Not having a choice, we came home this afternoon with 1,000 paper stick cotton swabs... that should last a while!
