Taiwan once was in UN and one of the four countries that has "veto vote" right during Chiang Kai-Shek era after World War II. However, President Jimmy Carter officially declared to abandon Taiwan in the winter of 1979. Taiwan's stock market was sharply down for 3 weeks. My mom was in USA with her Green Card since 1978 and she got a job. My mom called many times from California to Taiwan during midnight (different time zone) to wake me up and told me to sell her stock holdings and to resign my pharmacist job in Taiwan and she applied me to come to USA and got approved by U.S. government in 1979.

It was a tremendous shocking news to Taiwan. U.S. abandoned Taiwan and started diplomatic relationship with China because USA deemed that Chinese population is large and China was recovering from their "Cultural Revolution" massacre. After USA abandoned Taiwan, then came with UK, France, Japan, .... all the countries in the world followed USA footsteps to cut diplomatic relationship with Taiwan. It was outrageous, just because Taiwan is a small country. USA wanted to have international trades to make more money and sell products to China. It is all about MONEY.

Even USA knows Taiwan is democratic and China is communist, USA still abandoned Taiwan to go for China. It is so unfair.

Why can't China become a democratic country? Because Chinese people are afraid of their government to kill the protesters. Chinese people became "silent lambs" and they don't have knowledge of "Democracy". Look around the world, democratic countries are much more prosperous and strong and FREEDOM.

goannaoil,

You were born and raised in Australia which is a democracy (freedom) country, so you know well the differences in between Democracy and Communist. Democracy has election that people vote for the person who they believe will lead the country in a correct direction. Even I didn't vote for Trump, but he won the election, he is the U.S. president. Communist has no election, the leader is not people's choice. They only have one party and the annual meeting will decide who will be the next leader. People have no voice and there are no other competitors to compete with. China has to "impress" Taiwan by changing their system to Democracy that is "freedom" - people can criticize government or leader. If they don't have this concept and they just use "weapons" to occupy Taiwan, they won't get Taiwanese's heart.

Incidentally, have you been to New Zealand yet?? Don't tell me you haven't. The trip to the "Down Under" in Feb of 2015 is still the best trip I have ever had. Two countries are so close, but yet so different. New Zealand is so quiet, beautiful, tranquil, peaceful, (more sheep than human)... and no mammals in 18 century (only birds). Your country, Australia, on the contrary, has lots of noise (Sydney), full of energy and exciting, lots of people and animals (Kangaroo, Koala, wallabies, crocodile, ... in Cairns). I have good memory about both countries.

Do you know I met 4 Aussies during my birthday vacation to Hawaii in Aug 2016?? Because I wore a T-shirt with a picture of "cassowary", so they immediately knew I went to Australia. I have a fun day with them.

God forbid China will take over Taiwan. I was born and raised in Taiwan, I know very well about Taiwanese. China and Taiwan have been separated since 1949. It is like divorced 68 yrs long, how can they unit again??? No way. No Taiwanese want to unite with China. They kill their own people, millions of people during "Cultural Revolution" that last 10 yrs long. They didn't learn English during that 10 yrs. They closed "Iron Curtain" for 10 yrs, without outside news, information. They don't have Google, YouTube video, Gmail, Google Earth, .... The Chinese government has only one party, one voice, ... They don't know what is "Democracy". They are communists. They don't know what is real "Freedom". It is like oil can't mix with water. We can't get along with them, too much different. For the past 5 yrs, more and more Chinese came to USA, they brought lots of money to USA. Isn't that make their country even poorer? Money flew out to Australia, USA, England, Canada, ... to buy real estate. They don't know the local prices and have been over-charged. I saw many cases. The pregnant women came to USA to have American citizen babies and then take the babies back to China for 18 yrs in order to apply parents to be American citizens. So very weird. Why they do so? I came to USA and have stayed for almost 37 yrs, my daughter and son were born and raised in USA.

Just leave us, Taiwanese, alone. Look Korea, Vietnam, Germany, .... they all speak same language but the two sides people can't get along. They don't talk to each other. North Korea is communist, South Korea is democracy = freedom. North Vietnam is communist, South Vietnam is more freedom. East Germany is communist, West Germany is freedom country. As you can tell the differences of those people are very different, they simply can't unit in one (even the Berlin wall had been down).

You are an Aussie, do you want to become a communist? Do you want Australia become a communist country? You answer is the same as my answer. Do you understand? I am proud to be a Taiwanese-American. I have been in USA longer than in Taiwan.

Unless, China become a democracy. It will take long, long time for them to understand what is "Democracy" system equal to Freedom. People are looking forward NOT backward. If Taiwan become communist, it is a retreat. Do you think South Korea want to unit with North Korea??? South Vietnam want to unit with North Vietnam??? or West Germany want to unit with East Germany. No way !!! It is against people's wishes. The same reason, Taiwan doesn't want to unit with China. Just leave us alone. Freedom is very important.

You have read my profile, my blogs, .... You should know me better.

Taiwan overtakes United States on freedom list

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan has moved ahead of the United States on the list of free countries in the world released by non-governmental organization Freedom House.

According to the group’s rating system, Taiwan received 91 points out of 100, or two more than the U.S., giving the island nation a higher degree of freedom in its "Freedom in the World 2017" report.

In both the categories “political rights” and “civil liberties,” Taiwan received a 1, the best possible score, with 7 being the worst. For civil liberties, the figure represented an improvement from 2 the previous year, reportedly thanks to the independence of the media and to academic freedom.

As a result, the country’s average also moved in the right direction from 1.5 to 1.

For the first time in a decade, Taiwan joined the ranks of the “freest” countries in the world, Freedom House said.

Norway, Sweden and Finland received a perfect 100, while the Netherlands and Canada just fell short at 99 points. The only East Asian country performing better than Taiwan was Japan, with 96 points.

China was listed as “not free,” and with 15 points, it also earned a downward arrow, indicating a deteriorating situation, according to Freedom House.

Hong Kong received the status of “partly free” with 61 points, while South Korea was rated “free” with 82 points.

In its overview, Freedom House named “populists” and “autocrats” as a dual threat to global democracy, causing the 11th consecutive year of decline for freedoms across the world.

Taiwan got the highest Freedom score of 91 in 1st place in 2017, surpassed USA score of 89 that in 2nd place. Last year, Taiwan was in 2nd place behind of USA.

Although Taiwan is very small, but Israel is even smaller. We have Google, YouTube video and all the information in case people want to search the accurate information. Taiwanese people can criticize government, leaders, and peaceful demonstration to let the government do the necessary correction of its policies.
