Yingying Zhang hasn't been seen since her disappearance.

Christensen is accused of kidnapping 26-year-old missing University of Illinois scholar Yingying Zhang, who was last seen stepping into a black hatchback on June 9 after she left home to sign the lease on a new unit. She has not bee seen since.

The FBI has been watching Christensen since a week after Ms Zhang’s disappearance, listening in on his conversations and watching his every move, particularly when he turned up at a vigil for her, News Corp has reported.

The 28-year-old suspect joined Ms Zhang’s family and hundreds of others on June 29 when they marched through the university campus as part of a campaign to try and find her.

Christensen was heard talking “about the characteristics of an ideal victim” and pointed out people who fit that description, prosecutors said during a bail hearing this week.

It’s also alleged he told another person about how Ms Zhang “fought and resisted” when he abducted her.

CCTV places Ms Zhang at a bus stop in the Illinois city of Urbana on June 9 and shows her trying to flag down a bus that failed to stop.

A black Satum Astra drives past, circles back and stops in front of the clearly distressed Ms Zhang.

She was seen talking to the driver for about a minute before entering the car.

It’s alleged he took her back to his unit, where he held her against her will.

The tape also reveals Christensen allegedly threaten another person, who later went on to provide incriminating evidence, prosecutors said.

The FBI also alleges that its audio recording reveals how Christensen claims to have kidnapped Ms Zhang.

“Christensen stated that he brought YZ (Ms Zhang) back to his apartment and otherwise held her in his apartment against her will,” Special Agent Anthony Manganaro said in his statement.

It’s not clear who Christensen was talking to in the tape.

Police arrested Christensen the day after the vigil and charged him with kidnapping Ms Zhang - an agricultural sciences scholar visiting the university from China.

According to an FBI affidavit, after initially telling investigators that he was at home playing video games all day, Christensen later admitted to picking up an Asian woman in his black Saturn Astra that afternoon.

However, he claims he dropped her off not far from where he picked her up after she became distressed.

Although, investigators said the car’s front passenger door “appeared to have been cleaned to a more diligent extent than the other doors”, suggesting he had tried to conceal evidence that she had been in the vehicle.

Police also say he researched how to abduct someone two months before Ms Zhang went missing after finding search history on his phone that led to a website with a forum on abduction.

Ms Zhang disappeared about a month into her year-long scholarship at the university.

Christensen’s lawyer Tom Bruno said he did not think a “negative inference” could be made from his marching in the vigil for Ms Zhang.

He said Christensen was entitled to the presumption of innocence.

Magistrate Eric Long refused bail to Christensen and ordered that he stay in jail until trial.

He has not entered a plea in the case and he is being held at Macon County jail.

While Christensen has not been accused of killing Ms Zhang and her body has not been found, authorities say that due to the evidence they have gathered they believe she is dead.

To the parents who have children studying in U.S. universities, please buy car for them to drive. Of course, buy car come with car insurance. Tell them don't hitchhike or enter stranger's car. I have bought cars for my children when they got their driver's licenses. Both of my children were born and raised in USA, so they have no language barrier. They know the environment.

Life is precious. Don't trust strangers even they have PhD degree.

It has been over a month since Miss Zhang's disappearance. Please help to find her.
