To many, Jimi is considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He overtook my generation with a sound and lyric all of his own and his music lives on more than 40 years later.
Sadly Jimi passed away at the age of 27 back in September 18, 1970 a victim of Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll.

She is wearing a wedding dress... why?

I may have blogged this before, but I don't understand the cultural significance of a Chinese woman showing profile photos wearing a wedding dress. While a wedding is their ultimate goal, there are many steps before and after that significant day.
American folklore says it's bad luck for the groom to see his bride (to be) wearing a wedding dress before the ceremony.
That seems to complicate Eastern and Western customs... doesn't it?
I was scanning photos today and found at least three profiles where the woman is dressed for a wedding, complete with head dress and bouquet.
I've seen many profiles where the woman says she is patiently waiting for her man... but wearing a wedding dress while you wait (I think) is a bit much. Don't you agree?

I've noticed many important things are designed around arbitrary facts and figures. Speed limits, for example are in increments of 5 miles per hour. I imagine some committee decided a school zone speed must have been a number closest to the reaction time and stopping distance for a typical vehicle... mostly arbitrary.
Store operating hours... 10am until 9pm uh... Actually I'm waiting to see who is going to change that... my reasoning is all the other stores close at 9 and your store is open until 9:15, well I can figure the customers will all be shopping at your place when the other stores have closed.
Vinyl long playing records turned at 33-1/3rpm and single playing records were at 45rpm. I'm not sure but I'd say there was a lot of arbitrary in that decision.
We all know the measurement of a foot was based on the size of some king's foot... his younger brother's foot was less than a foot!
The spacing of railroad tracks came into dispute a few times. The story I heard was it was the same spacing as stagecoach wheels because of the width needed to harness two side-by-side horses. I'm pretty sure it dates back to the early days of railroad when they hired companies from Europe to setup railroads in America... don't quote me on this, but I'm sure some arbitrary dimensions played a part of this.
DOS... remember that? I believe the first version of this operating system used 64k and Microsoft did an arbitrary ten times limit to 640k totally underestimating the growth and future needs.
Fuel tank capacity... oh, I wanna know. Was the weight of a full tank a factor or travel range or does it reach the limits of a fuel pump or did they have 1,000 left over from a previous model and management told engineering to use the same ones as before? Oh, I smell some arbitrary again.
The perfect recipe with 2 cups of flower, 1 egg, one tablespoon of butter and one eye of newt. I'd again say arbitrary... Maybe someone knows if thee are recipes that calculate one and a half eggs?

Hey you tech savvy guys and girls. Not long ago I read (in some technical article) that the next release of USB connectors will be non-directional. Just like car keys where it doesn't matter which side is up. The new USB's will do the same.
Everyone knows how annoying it is when reaching behind a computer to plug in a USB cable that won't fit. You must fumble to flip the connector over.
Polarized USB connectors will become a thing of the past.
Yeah, I know there are millions of USB devices on the market now... I'm sure the new connector will also be smaller and offer faster transfer rates.
So get out your checkbooks and ATM cards as we come to another round of new devices to spend money on!

Some may think it's trivial but I'm often driving 600 miles (960km) per week. Driving is and important part of my life. Let's say I'm the first car at a red light. My eyes are focused on the light for cross traffic so I will know (in advance) when my light will turn green. However, the INSTANT it turns green, someone from behind is tooting their horn as though I'm holding up traffic.
That's when I 'go into action' and let my foot off the brake ever so s l o w l y because I'm no longer interested in the jack rabbit start I had initially planned.

The majority of Chinese women I have communicated with have expressed they dislike men with facial hair. One woman was so opinionated she declined a relationship with me even though I offered to shave off my mustache. Is that funny? She said she didn't like my mustache so I told her I would shave it off for her... that wasn't good enough simply because I 'had one' and she disliked it. Talk about narrow minded... well, that's the subject of another blog. For this one, the topic will remain: Chinese women (in general) dislike facial hair.

Matchmaking and the Mail Order Bride...

I first heard the term Mail Order Bride when I was a and it had a negative connotation... as though something was wrong with the person who had to resort to shop for one. Maybe it was the extreme situation where a guy was contracted to work for a company in a foreign country for extended operations. He selected his future wife from a catalog!
When did Matchmaking start?
I say probably near the dawn of mankind. It's in all cultures and all parts of the world and all levels of society. I could envision two farmers meet up at an auction and become friends. One says to the other "My needs a wife... I hear you have a young . Let's throw a party and have them meet." Maybe the father is reluctant to give away his so the other farmer offers a few steers from his herd! That would mean arranged marriages started centuries ago especially where royalty 'kept the wealth' amongst themselves and a poor boy had no chance to win the hand of a princess.
20+ years ago I was dating a Chinese woman who asked me to marry her. One of the questions was "How much dowry to you plan to give my father?" At that point, I realized financial stability had overruled love! She married the highest bidder, a CEO of a strong national business who often entertained her parents and family. Although she really claimed to love me, I didn't pass the financial evaluation.
Did professional Matchmaking decline with the age of internet and online dating? Those with a computer didn't need the help of a professional, they could do the research by themselves. Successful if there aren't any language barriers.
Extending across an ocean, I found there are several websites where matchmaking in China appears to be alive. Let's face it, if the woman doesn't speak English, she has an extremely difficult time meeting Western men. Some professional matchmakers are directly linked to Asian based sites where they show photos of the translators, and promote their business directly on the website. There is assurance (so they say) dealing with them, the woman you select is a and her statistics have been verified. there is no deception. You know the e-mails are coming from a translation service. Hopefully, if the relationship blossoms, the matchmaker will provide the necessary services to assist the man to travel to China and meet the woman... and pay the matchmaker's fee.
However, I have seen them operate on subterfuge on regular dating sites. You may think the woman with 4 or 5 perfect photos and a perfectly written introduction is coming online to read her e-mail when in truth, it's her matchmaker. This is against the rules on many dating sites and profiles reported for doing this will be closed. I understand that rule perfectly. The matchmaker is profiting from the use of a free dating site.
What I see is they are running a business of deception right from the beginning. Going to a site run by professional matchmakers is one thing, but going to another site and thinking the woman you are corresponding with isn't, is just wrong.

It's amazing how many young women state in their introduction they are seeking a man to be with them all their life. One small problem. Most of these women are around 35 years old and they are seeking men who are 60-65.
Let's do some math... shall we?
Take a healthy guy who is 60 years old who has ancestors that tend to live to 80. That gives him a life expectancy of 20 more years on this earth. There is a good chance the last 5 years could be in a nursing home. Hopefully not, but percentage wise, at 75 that could be a reality.
Okay... they marry and oops, she soon has a . By the time the is ready to graduate high-school, mom would be around 54 and dad would be around 78.
I remember some classmates who had elderly parents. They always seemed to be embarrassed when their parents attended school functions and other ' parents were in their 40's.
Maybe it's not a good idea... then again, it could be just the opposite. She marries an older man, forces him to live a lifestyle he's not suited for. He soon dies. She collects on his life insurance, becomes a cougar, entertains younger men and lives happily ever after!
