A Taiwan train (台鐵) 太魯閣號出軌 crashed on Good Friday, April 2nd, 2021 that accident caused 50 people died and more than 200 injured. April 2nd was the first day of Taiwan national "Tomb Sweeping day" plus weekend. The train was fully loaded almost 500 passengers from the capital Taipei to Taitung.
A construction site manager, Lee Yi-hsiang (李義祥), 49, whose lorry slid on to a railway track and led to Taiwan's worst train disaster in 5 decades has expressed "deep regret". Mr. Lee's flatbed lorry was parked on an embankment but slipped down it, causing the train to derail on Friday near the city of Hualien.
Investigators say CCTV footage from the front carriage showed the train driver had only 6.9 seconds to respond and the train was only 250m (820ft) away from the lorry, not enough time or distance for the train driver to stop and avoid the collision. The probe is now looking into whether Mr Lee failed to set the emergency brake or whether there was a mechanical failure in his vehicle.
Rescue crews are still removing the train wreck from the tunnel, and fear they may still find more bodies
At least 50 people were killed and more than 200 injured in the crash.
Mr. Lee was questioned over the weekend by prosecutors and released on bail, but on Sunday he was taken back into custody because he was deemed a flight risk and had a previous conviction.
Reading a statement to news crews outside his house, Mr Lee said he would co-operate with crash investigators, and "take the responsibility I should take". He was then taken away by police.
He was part of a team who regularly inspected Taiwan's mountainous eastern train line for landslides and other risks. He was also thought to be the flatbed's operator.
Some survivors lost their whole families, and Taiwan declared three days of national mourning.
Priest Sung Chih-chiang said he spoke to one female survivor who lost her husband and two in the crash. "She could not find her . When she yelled, she found her was under the steel panels. She put some effort into moving those pieces one by one, but her 's voice became quieter and quieter, and then there was no response," the priest told Reuters.
Investigators have been going through the train's recording devices and CCTV footage from the front carriage, the chairman of the Taiwan Transportation Safety Board told AFP.
"According to the testimonies by some passengers, they heard the horn being sounded and it's believed the train driver had spotted an object on the track," Hong Young said. He added that the train driver, who was among those killed, would have struggled to avoid the crash. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I offer my sincere condolence to all the victims in this train crash. Please be strong for all the survivors. Please take good care of yourselves.

Texas residents are ending up with $5,000 electric bills after the winter storms

February was Chinese lunar New Year's day, I received a t*xt from my da*ghter said "Happy Chinese New Year!!" and next t*xt she said "It's icy here". My da*ghter has been working at a hospital as an OB/GYN MD in Texas since late June of 2020. She has worked in Detroit since her MD graduation in June 20' (I've attended every her graduation) for her residency MD program for a year. Then she moved Northern California for a year, then moved 2 New York for another year. T* be a MD is a long journey.
In my impression of Texas is a warm, h*t, dry state, full of oil wells and cows. This year the winter storm in Texas has changed my image of Texas. I watched the TV, internet news, Texas is in crisis. Here is some summary of Texas winter storms that never happened in the past century.
Some Texans were billed $1,000 a day for electricity during last week's frigid weather. The wholesale pr*ce of electricity surged ,000 % as demand increased and supply fell offline. Texas residents endured days without power during last week's winter storms are facing a new obstacle: Electricity bills over $5,000 for less than a week of energy.
Some customers of the state-owned electric grid are seeing the eye-popping, five-figure power bills because their plans are tied to the wholesale market . In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, residents have been with $1,000 day charges for electricity, The Dallas Morning News reported. Residents have taken social media or other outlets show $5,000 bills - or more- over a period of about 5 days.
Power outrage (no heater), water shortage (water pipes exploded), snow, icy cold weather has k*lled at least 21 people already. Some people burned their furniture get warm, some even got their house burned down, the fire fighters can't put out of fire because no water. They watched the house burn down itself. Some people cooked snow flush their toilets.
President Joe Biden faces his first weather challenge since his inauguration. President Biden declares major disaster in Texas.

US lifts self-imposed restrictions with Taiwan

The United States is lifting decades-old restrictions between American and Taiwanese officials, in a move that will fundamentally change Washington's relationship with the self-governed island -- and is expected to anger Beijing.
Washington has for years "created complex internal restrictions to regulate" US officials' dealings with Taiwan "in an attempt to appease the Communist regime in Beijing," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement on Saturday. "No more," Pompeo wrote.
China considers Taiwan a part of its territory, and US dealings with the democratically ruled island have long been a source of tension. In a statement, Pompeo, a staunch critic of China, wrote that US diplomats should now consider all previous State Department contact guidelines regarding relations with Taiwan to be "null and void."
The order comes less than two weeks before the administration of President-elect Joe Biden takes over, and is likely to be a hurdle for the incoming team to deal with.
The US has maintained close ties with Taiwan since it split from mainland China in 1949 after the end of a bloody civil war. But until recently Washington has avoided major displays of friendship so as to not antagonize Beijing, which continues to view the self-governing democracy of around 24 million people as an inseparable part of its territory, under its One China policy.
China's leader, Chairman Xi Jinping, has been clear in his ambitions to "reunify" the island with the mainland, and has refused to rule out the use of force, even though the ruling Chinese Communist Party has never exerted direct control over Taiwan. Under the One China policy, the US has unofficial relations with Taiwan and posts unofficial representatives to Taipei. Washington has also long provided arms to the island under the terms of the 40-year-old Taiwan Relations Act. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nobody understood how much "suffering from China's threat" for 40 yrs since former U.S. President Jimmy Carter announced "abandon Taiwan and establish diplomatic relationship with China". My ancestors have been in Taiwan for over 400 yrs, CCP only has 71 yrs history.
Look how many atrocities in China that CCP has done to their own people. From Cultural Revolution, Great Famine, that k*lled 80 million people, to Tienanmen Square massacre, to One Baby policy, Falun Gong organ harvesting, HongKongers suppression, Mongolians, Xinjiang, Uyghurs genocide, .... How can USA not see those crimes? How can the world not see those atrocities? Why CCP had to k*ll so many people and not allow to talk about its crimes?? Chinese are "silent lambs", but doesn't mean the world don't know about those facts. If CCP is a regime show us they love their Chinese people, Taiwanese will be unified with them. But, no, no, no, CCP threatened Taiwan, sending fighting jets to Taiwan strait to weaken Taiwan defense.
Taiwan has 23.8 million in population. We didn't do anything against CCP, but why CCP wants to bomb Taiwan to flat, not keep a person but keep the island. Is because Taiwan government love people? Is because Taiwanese are rich and have freedom? So, CCP is jealous about Taiwan.
I have said I like U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo before, now I said the same again. Mr. Pompeo knows what is justice and "Justice will prevail". The world will see the truth. Taiwan only has 7 people died on Coronavirus that is a good example of the world.

Insurrection on U.S. Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021

I was watching CNBC while trading stock market simultaneously on January 6, 2021 morning. Then the CNBC switched to the U.S. Capitol Hill and broadcasted the news of riot on Capitol. The unbelievable violent scene unfolded on TV screen. Please refer to the photos inserted.
Trump is a demagogue. He lost the presidential election since November 2020, and January 6, 2021 was the day "Electoral College" scheduled to cast vote count in Congress. Trump took the failure of his reelection into his own hands and encouraged his supporters to go on U.S. Capitol and caused chaotic riot.
The invasion of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 was stoked in plain sight. For weeks, the far-right supporters of President Donald Trump railed on social media that the election had been stolen. They openly discussed the idea of violent protest on the day Congress met to certify the result.
“We came up with the idea to occupy just outside the CAPITOL on Jan 6th,” leaders of the Stop the Steal movement wrote on Dec. 23. They called their Wednesday demonstration the Wild Protest, a name taken from a tweet by Trump that encouraged his supporters to take their grievances to the streets of Washington. “Will be wild,” the president tweeted.
The next day, and blocked Trump's to prevent his foolish tweeting. The House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will proceed 2nd impeachment on Trump even the Joe Biden's inauguration day (January 20, 2021) is approaching.
