Giveaway of the day and other things...

I rarely buy software as there are so many offerings of free products, but I'm reluctant to try something without reading the user reviews first.

Firewalls, virus and spyware protection, utility and paint programs. Lots of good ones. I didn't get into CD and DVD ripping but that area of free programs is over saturated. There are the usual places to download free or free to try stuff including the one in the blog title. I go there daily just to see what the offerings are and the few I have actually downloaded are pretty good.

The most bothersome part of installing free software are the self installing offers that come with the installation of (what appears to be) harmless free programs.

My wife has her own computer that is setup in Chinese. It's not 100% but most of the functions she uses are in Chinese. Last week, she needed help as a free online translator she installed was self installing other popup windows and turning her computer into a full-time advertising board.

I quickly installed malware-bytes then disconnected the computer from the network. Running a scan found 328 traces of malware. Nothing really serious, they were medium level threats. After, I started uninstalling anything that was installed on her computer this year. Typical to some... they want to go to the internet to have you fill-out questionnaires and other special offers. That's my reason for pulling the network cable, I've see lots of programs that install 2 while you are uninstalling 1.

Similar to apps for cellphones, usually the free stuff comes with strings attached. Like nag screens requesting you to by the paid version so you won't have to see the advertisements every time you use the app.
