One mans TRASH is another mans TREASURE...

I made a comment to a previous blog that a 30 year old refrigerator stopped working after Hurricane Irma. I ran it on generator power for a day during the storm and it never got cold enough to make ice. After hooking things back on house current, it worked for a little and completely stopped getting cold. I could hear the compressor kick-it then shut off after a second or two. My suspicion was incorrect voltage from the generator that damaged the compressor.
Not wasting time, I started shopping online at The Home Depot... a place where I buy many things. They had a few different models in the size and price range I was looking for but many were stocked in their warehouse and scheduled deliveries in my area were a week out. My wife and I went to the local store to see what we could get sooner.
It was our luck a floor model closeout was marked down around $250 from their normal price and I called a friend with a pickup truck to see if he was available. The answer was yes, so bought the new refrigerator.

We moved the new refrigerator into the house, plugged it in and it started working. It was then we rolled the old refrigerator to the utility easement... a grassy area between the street and sidewalk. The easement is wide enough to park cars and runs along all the streets here. This is where we normally place garbage cans for the city to service.

In my neighborhood, things get picked up twice a week. If you place an appliance there, you have 100% chance someone will remove it before the city comes on their scheduled appointment. Any appliances get recycled for their scrap metal value.

You cannot discard a refrigerator without removing the doors. It's law as some child crawled into one and died. So I went back to the house for tools to remove the door. Probably 5 minutes had passed and there was already a guy with an old mini-van squeezing the refrigerator into the sliding door to the side of his vehicle. I offered my help but he gave me a toothless smile and said he was okay.

That was quick...
