Pedestrian Bridge Collapses...

I received a text from a friend telling me a bridge in Miami collapsed today. Checking the news stories I found out that a pedestrian bridge at the Florida International University (FIU) South Campus came down killing at least 4 and injuring more than a dozen others. Aerial photos showed the bridge was spanning over a 7 lane divided roadway that passes in front of the college.

This structure was the first of it's kind and as the story detailed it was 'swung into place' this past Saturday.

It appears the structure was precast cement and several specialized lift trucks aligned it into the end supports and lowered it down in the early morning hours. Yahoo ran the story complete with photos and descriptions. They also included a link to the Twitter ceremony last Saturday when the bridge was installed.

The story was complete with photos of crushed vehicles. If you get queasy seeing things like this I would avoid the link.

The company who contracted to move the bridge into place was clear that they were not involved in the construction of the bridge and their scope was completed without incident and according to all technical requirements. They would cooperate with investigators.
