My best friend, a bank CEO/Chairman passed away

I have known to a Caucasian banker CEO/Chairman from Yahoo Personals (that online dating site closed long time ago) since late May 2006. He was a Real Estate mogul that he own houses in San Marino, in Brentwood (the city O.J. Simpson murdered his ex-wife and a waiter) and 2 houses in Santa Monica. His divorce in 1997, his ex-wife got the Brentwood house that almost 1 acre (with swimming pool and tennis court) and one house in Santa Monica. He was like Trump, very good in Real Estate investment, he didn't believe in "Global Warming, Climate Change". I don't like Trump's personality and attitude.

On the first date in June 2006, he told me his story. He got married to his High-School Sweetheart on a day after high school graduation. Both of them were 18 in Washington DC. I said "you were too young". He smiled and said "I thought I could concur the world". On the 3rd date, he invited me to dinner. He told me he had two biological daughters, but the 3rd is adopted. He met a Mexican couple with ten at church, the 9th was 18 months old but couldn't speak a word, such as Papa, or Mama. They couldn't afford to take the baby to see doctor. So, my banker friend took the baby to see doctors and the diagnosis was "Autism". The banker officially adopted the baby to live with his family. The Autism girl became normal as they treated her as their own. His story touched my heart.

For the old bloggers on Asia Friendfinder know that I mentioned this banker CEO many times. I don't believe that he passed away in January this year. I lost my best friend for 16 years. He was 74 years old. He and I exchanged more than 10 thousand emails, hundred of phone calls, text messages. The last email he wrote to me was January 10, 2022 when the TV discussed about Trump encouraged his followers went to Capitol Hills and had a riot (insurrection). It's hard for me to know he passed away 2 days later.

I was wondering he didn't email me for the past 8 months. I Googled his name and city he lived and found out from "Obituary" online that my banker friend passed away. I am sad.

My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion

Every night in my dreams
I see you, I feel you
That is how I know you go on
Far across the distance
And spaces between us
You have come to show you go on

Love can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go 'til we're gone
Love was when I loved you
One true time I'd hold to
In my life, we'll always go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more, you open the door
And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on
Although I and the banker friend is just a 16 years friendship, but I will always remember him and his words. He is always in my heart. I think this Celine Dion song in movie "Titanic" theme song can represent my feeling about my banker friend. My heart will go on and on .......

Honesty is the best policy.

My banker friend "fit the bill" to me. He was 6'1" tall, lives 19 miles from me, intelligent (B.S. & M.S. degrees in Finance, and a MBA degree from American University in Washington DC), his father was a Spanish from Spain, his mother was an Irish, but he said both of his parents died in their mid-50's), his older sister lived in Spain and he went to Spain once or twice a year. He sometimes, emailed me from Spain, China, Australia, ... during his traveling.

He was born in New York, but grew-up in Washington DC and all his education was in Washington DC till 1972 when he got a "Loan Officer" job in California. He flew to CA for job interview and moved his wife and a daughter to CA. He loved the weather in CA and lived in CA ever since 1972 except his high school and university reunions. He was a happy, energetic, optimist person. He said he could live over 70 was much older than his parents that died in their mid-50's.

He used to talk or email with me about current events when something important appeared. Now I can't talk to him about the current event. I can't hear or read his financial advice anymore.

I hope I can find another man just like him.

Honesty is the best policy.

The banker was healthy, vivid, energetic, and hardworking person. However, he told me when he had his 2nd eye Cataract surgery, the General Anesthetic doctor said my banker friend woke up 30 minutes late than normal people, so the eye doctor and the anesthesiologist sent him to the ER. The ER doctor diagnosis was the banker had AFib "Atrial Fibrillation" n.
心房纖維性顫動 in his heart. The ER doctor prescribed him a prescription called "Xarelto". But that was about 4 or 5 years ago I think.

The banker passed away on January 12, 2022. No wonder I sent text message to him for his birthday and Happy Father's Day in June and he didn't reply. I also sent my Rhine & Moselle river cruise in May 15 - 30 pictures to him but he didn't answer. Until Sept 28,2022 I checked Google search engine and found out he already passed away 8 months ago. Nobody in his family know me because he wanted to protect their privacy. I am just his friend for 16 years but he taught me a lot.

I don't like to use the "past tense" to describe my banker friend, but he passed. He always talked and emailed with me about politics, religion, current events, presidential election, investments, .... but only friendship, not romance. It takes two to tango. Rich and divorced people don't want to share half of wealth to another person as they don't have "community property" together. I got daunted from divorce that I was a provider, a breadwinner. Once bitten twice shy. Been there, done that.

In June 2007, the banker told me to sell property, so I did. Then the 2008 sub-prime loan crisis lead many homeowners couldn't afford to pay mortgage payments and been foreclosed. The banker told me to buy rental properties in Las Vegas. He explained there are Casinos in Vegas that open 24 hrs and need to have 3 shifts employees. Each casino average need 600 employees. Those employees need to have a place to live, so they couldn't afford to buy, so they rent. I went to Las Vegas alone in 2011 to purchase "foreclosure house or condo" when every street had sign said "Bank own, for sale". I purchased 5 properties and came back and emailed him. He replied "You are the Queen in Las Vegas". Those 5 rental properties now become double, triple even quadruple. I sold 3 but still own 2 properties in Las Vegas. I put those sold proceeds in stock account and changed from margin account to cash account to prevent margin calls and don't pay interest. In 2020, the pandemic spread to Europe and the USA. The sold proceeds came in time for me to buy lots of stocks. I made six figure profits in 2020 and paid IRS 35% tax bracket. In 2021, again I made six figure profits and paid 28.8% income tax to IRS and California tax too.

Although the banker never gave me any money, but his advice really worth a lot. I became millionaire. I went to travel after my mom passed away in Sept 2013. Went to Swiss for 3 days/2 nights. Traveled to Australia and New Zealand in Feb 2015 for 16 days, a birthday vacation to Hawaii in 2016, went to Italy for 36 days in 2018 (the longest time ever). I paid in full for a river cruise in Nov 2018 for July 2020. But the pandemic spread to Europe, the travel agency postponed twice for Rhine & Moselle rivers cruise till May 2022 for 15 days. I want to see the world.

2022 has been a bad year, the inflation cause FOMC interest rate hikes. On 3/17/22 interest raised 25 basic point, on 5/5/22 raised 50 basic point, on 6/16/22 raised interest 75 basic point, on 7/27/22 interest hike 75 basic point, on 9/21/22 another 75 basic point. The stock market plunged as each interest hike.

Russia invaded Ukraine since Feb 24, 2022. It has been over 7 months, we haven't seen cease the fire any time soon. China lockdown, zero tolerance to pandemic, mortgage crisis, people couldn't pay loan payment, people starving, drought made many lakes dried. CCP let 17 Africa countries delinquent in pay back loans, ... and many weird things happened in China. I think their economy is in danger to crash.

The British prime minister, Boris Johnson announced to step down amid scandals on July 7, 2022. The Japanese former prime minister, Shinzo Abe has been assassinated on July 8 and Abe's funeral on 9/27. The British Queen Elizabeth II passed away at age 96, funeral was held in Westminster Hall on 9/19/2022. Taiwan had a 6.8 magnitude earthquake, one person died on 9/20/22.
