I see some updates to the website.
Some are cosmetic and some are enhancements.
The 'winks received' page has changed.
On the main page it currently shows I have 10 winks...
I know the last 2 came this week.
But, when I look to see who winked, I get this system message:
You did not receive any flirts in the past 30 days
Sorry, I had a wink 2 days ago.
Winks only last 30 days.
I have 10... show them to me!

The song The Living Years by Mike And The Mechanics plays an important part in my life.
It was co-written by Mike Rutherford and B. A. Robertson, both of whom had recently lost their fathers. The song combined features of both writers' relationships with their fathers; it dealt with Rutherford's strained relationship with his late father and the birth of Robertson's three months after his father's death.
It's a sad reminder how I lost my father. He was more than my dad... sometimes he was my best friend. When I was a musician, my dad got my band to play in places other managers could get us booked. Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin may have been his favorites, but sure knew a bunch of Led Zeppelin songs! Sadly, toward the end, it seemed like I became the dad and he became the .
Over the years, my dad had been withering away from a debilitating heart disease. I could no longer be his caretaker in his final days... he was much too sick and had to be hospitalized. He slipped in and out of consciousness so they put him in intensive care. The doctors informed me his kidneys weren't functioning and he had 24-36 hours to live.
I went home that morning, notified family and friends and made plans to have out-of-town company. I wanted the place to look nice, so I hired a landscaper to cut the gress. Usually, I mowed my lawn, but I didn't have time. To my shock, the mower busted a (hose bib) faucet connected to main waterline leading to the house. Thinking it was an easy fix, I ran to The Home Depot for replacement parts. Most of the repair was going well, but I fought with 1" of rusted thread that wouldn't come out of the pipe fitting. I was considering giving up and calling a plumber. Instead, I got up early the next morning and tried again. I successfully removed the thread and installed a new faucet. I turned on the water and quickly showered. As I locked the front door, headed out to the hospital, I could hear the phone ringing so I turned back to answer it. Sadly, it was the hospital informing me, my father had passed. They needed me to identify the body and sign some papers.
I had been to the hospital to see my dad several times that week. He knew his time on this Earth was growing short. Knowing it would be his last day alive, I had hoped to be at the hospital early in the morning . The house was without running water and I was delayed with the plumbing repairs. The hospital wouldn't allow me to stay all night. I told my ex-wife that I felt guilty for not being there.
My ex-wife accompanied me to the funeral (as I did for her when her father passed) and she said "Can't you see? it wasn't meant for you to be there, you were spared the trauma of having seen his passing."
My ex is usually right when it comes to things like that.

Buttered toast...

If you order toast in a restaurant it comes dry and you add butter.
When I make toast at home, I butter the bread first, add garlic powder and parsley, then I toast it.
The aroma, texture and flavor is much better!

J.D. Powers & Associates wants me to conduct a new car survey now. It's so important to them they are baiting me with a chance to win a cash prize.
My trial membership for XM radio is asking for a survey.
I signed up for ACA and everyone involved is asking for me to take a survey.
Some requests are by mail, most are by e-mail and one woman called me during working hours trying to get me to take a survey that would only take 20 minutes. It took me three tries of saying "No survey, I'm working now" to get her to stop. Her comeback was "We'll mail you a survey. Kindly fill it out..."

It's nearly 4am in China and I see half of the women online right now are in China.
This is a great sacrifice to be online in the middle of the night checking out profiles.
Certainly the chance of meeting an American man is greater during daylight hours in the US, except on a Sunday when they are probably watching sports on TV.
The peak time for dating websites (in the US) is Sunday night between the hours of 7-9pm as everyone is winding down from their weekend and searching for love online.

Buying things I don't (really) need...

I'm guilty of this.
I bought a quad-core refurbished computer running Windows 8. Two 2 weeks later, I got another just like it. Why? I was pleased with the first purchase and know this retailer runs specials that sell out quickly. It was a good deal and If I procrastinated, there wouldn't be any more like this. Maybe.
Sure, they run refurbished/off-lease deals all the time, but I liked what was being offered and have a spare now... just in case. It's actually my correspondence computer I use all the time and I justify it as so.
Spares... someone asked why I often keep spares of things, especially tools. Computers are tools that help me do my job. They are configured to my liking. Should something happen to a work computer... the down-time setting up another computer is very costly.
I'm sure I mentioned this before. I played music professionally. Starting off as a , we would work on Miami Beach busking at the hotels. Play music poolside for tourists and receive tips for the performance. That means all the equipment would get setup and packed several times a day as we moved from hotel to hotel. If something (like a microphone or guitar cord) broke, we were unable to perform and it would cost us dearly. I learned to keep spares of guitar strings, extension cords and in later years, an extra guitar.
We did a gig once where we drove around during break time. The guitarist placed his guitar on the ledge between the seat and back window. It was a convertible and he decided to retract the roof. Unfortunately, the mechanism retracted back crushing the guitar! Fortunately, there were other bands playing this event and he was able to borrow a guitar. That wouldn't be possible with me as I'm left handed and have custom made lefty guitars. Yeah.. it was a pain, but I carried 2 left-handed guitars to my gigs.
Back to the 'stuff' I don't use. I'm moving on with technology and it's time to unload some things I bought with speculation I'd be using and 6 years later these products are new in the box, or tried and couldn't implement in my routine.
I'm home from work today and my plan is to sort through things on my back porch... garden tools that need to go in the shed but don't fit because I'm hoarding too much junque.
I created a self-imposed moratorium on purchasing until I'm really sure I need it. Yeah, I need to use up those packages of ball-point pens, markers and office gadgets before buying more.

Earlier this year, I bought a new car. 2014 Hyundai Veloster.
Although it's a really nice sporty looking economy car, the most noticeable thing to complain about is it's lack of finesse. Yes, I'm being picky.
Many of the controls (on new cars) are digital and/or electro-mechanical and that equates to a lack of smoothness. I'm an analog kinda guy and miss the 'control-ability' of steel cable from accelerator to carburetor/fuel injector and not some electronic pedal that's spring loaded to 'feel like an accelerator pedal.' My senses tell me I'm driving an arcade game and not a real car.
Maybe it's better in more expensive vehicles, but finesse is lacking on the low end of the spectrum.

Some examples:
The drivers window automatic down has a hair trigger. The slightest touch and it's on it's way down. Usually it takes three tries to get the window to only go down 2 inches.
The rear hatch doesn't have a key access. From the outside, you must use the wireless key lock. The same for the passenger doors. The actuator on the hatchback is a membrane that senses pressure and activates an electric switch to release the hatch.
Only the drivers door can be opened by a key.
Seat adjustments... choppy. After you think it clicked into place try pushing and pulling a bit and you'll find out it's not. Be sure the seat 'clicks' and locks or you will get a surprise.
Actually, there is one thing that works smoothly. In the front center of the roof between the visors is a sunglasses compartment that has perfect hydraulic smoothness. I have a spare cellphone for emergency that I stash there.
Cars... I cannot do without one!

Guitar talk. Fender vs. Gibson. The comparisons never end. When it comes to guitar sound, sometimes the musician has more control by personal style than the instrument itself... however that can also be disputed.
Let's look at the specs:
The Fender Stratocaster model has a scale length of 25-1/2" that's measured from the nut to the bridge.
The Gibson Les Paul model (depending on the year manufactured) has a scale length of 24-3/4" from the nut to the bridge.
That's about 3/4 of an inch difference.... in general, a longer string has deeper bass tones and a stronger sound. The shorter string has a warmer tone, lower tension and easier to play.
Jimi Hendrix popularized the Stratocaster. It's said he tuned 1/2 note lower than standard tuning This gave his guitar more of a 'twangy' sound.
There's so much more to guitars than this quick blog reveals... for example, Fender guitars are made as components and assembled on a production line. The neck is 'bolt-on' and can be removed for adjustment or replacement. Gibson necks are typically glued on directly to the body. The difference? Most say the glued on neck has better sustain as the string vibration transmits directly to the body.
Again, the setup and musician performing typically can override those claims. When you're standing in front of three stacks of 100 watt Marshall amps, lack of sustain is NOT an issue!
